Ohio Hazardous Waste Regulations

Ohio EPA divides hazardous waste into 2 categories:

  • Listed Wastes: Ohio has federal lists of 500 specific materials that are deemed to be hazardous by the EPA. This list is published in the Code of Federal Regulations (40 CFR Part 261) in four separate sections.
  • Characteristic Waste: If the waste is not listed, Ohio has ‘characteristic waste’ such as:
  • Ignitability: Flammable under certain conditions like solvents or some paints.
  • Corrosiveness: Substantial acid/base like battery acid.
  • Reactivity: Explosive or release toxic fumes like certain cyanides.
  • Toxicity: Harmful/fatal if ingested or absorbed or if disposed on land, the solid or groundwater can leach toxic chemicals like wastes containing mercury.

Similarly, industries in Ohio are regulated with EPA guidelines as per the amounts of hazardous waste they generate. The categories are:

  • Very Small Quantity Generator (VSQG): Generator of 220 lbs (or less) of hazardous waste per month. A VSQG cannot store more than 13,200 lbs of hazardous waste onsite at any time.
  • Small Quantity Generator (SQG): Generator of 220 to 2,200 lbs of hazardous waste per month. An SQG cannot store more than 13,000 lbs of hazardous waste on-site at once. An SQG must get an EPA Identification Number.
  • Large Quantity Generator (LQG): A hazardous waste generator of more than 2,200 lbs per month can store this waste onsite for just 90 days. An LQG also should have an EPA Identification Number.

We always make sure that we handle your waste in a fully compliant manner. How? – We exceed all regulatory requirements and use the most environmentally sustainable solutions set forth by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). By partnering with us, we help to lower your compliance risks and help you avoid penalties of $10,000!

Yes, hazardous waste can be recycled. Hazardous waste recycling, reusing, and reclaiming help to avoid environmental hazards by reducing the volume of waste, protecting scarce natural resources, reducing the nation’s/company’s reliance on raw materials/energy, and providing economic benefits.

Suppose you own a facility that generates hazardous waste at a quantity of 220 lbs. (Very Small Quantity Generator) to more than 2,200 lbs. (Large Quantity Generator). In that case, you are obligated legally to dispose of that waste properly. You should work with a hazardous waste officer to put safe work practices and procedures for your faculty and staff and learn/teach proper methods of hazardous waste disposal.

Here’s how you can manage & dispose of hazardous waste in Ohio:
1. Identify and segregate hazardous waste accurately from non-hazardous waste,
2. Properly store hazardous waste in labeled and secured containers,
3. Obtain an EPA ID number for your site if you generate a certain amount, i.e., more than 220 lbs to more than 2,200 lbs. of hazardous waste,
4. Ensure the safe transportation of hazardous waste to licensed treatment, storage, or disposal facilities (TSDFs),
5. Maintain records and reports as required by Ohio EPA,

To properly dispose the hazardous waste, you can hire a licensed waste disposal company regulated by the Ohio EPA and the federal EPA. These companies can effectively treat, store, and dispose of your hazardous waste.

The general Ohio’s hazardous waste regulations include:
1. Identifying and categorizing your waste according to federal and state regulations,
2. Properly storing and containing hazardous waste to prevent any leaks, spills, or other potential environmental hazards,
3. Getting EPA Identification number for SQG and LQG,
4. Complying with regulations on waste transportation and ensuring hazardous waste is transported by a licensed transporter who has a valid U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) registration number,
5. Utilizing a permitted hazardous waste treatment, storage, or disposal facility (TSDF) for disposing of the waste material,
6. Keeping accurate records and submitting necessary reports in a timely manner to regulatory agencies.

The total cost of hazardous waste disposal depends on the company, type of waste (reactive hazardous, restricted hazardous, etc.), weight/volume of hazardous waste, and frequency of pickups. We really can’t estimate pricing when related to haz waste. Haz waste is truly a case-by-case basis that is hard to give a proper range.
