Ohio Hazardous Waste Regulations

Ohio EPA divides hazardous waste into 2 categories:

• Listed Wastes: Ohio has federal lists of 500 specific materials that are deemed to be hazardous by the EPA. This list is published in the Code of Federal Regulations (40 CFR Part 261) in four separate sections.
• Characteristic Waste: If the waste is not listed, Ohio has ‘characteristic waste’ such as:
• Ignitability: Flammable under certain conditions like solvents or some paints.
• Corrosiveness: Substantial acid/base like battery acid.
• Reactivity: Explosive or release toxic fumes like certain cyanides.
• Toxicity: Harmful/fatal if ingested or absorbed or if disposed on land, the solid or groundwater can leach toxic chemicals like wastes containing mercury.

Similarly, industries in Ohio are regulated with EPA guidelines as per the amounts of hazardous waste they generate. The categories are:

• Very Small Quantity Generator (VSQG): Generator of 220 lbs (or less) of hazardous waste per month. A VSQG cannot store more than 13,200 lbs of hazardous waste onsite at any time.
• Small Quantity Generator (SQG): Generator of 220 to 2,200 lbs of hazardous waste per month. An SQG cannot store more than 13,000 lbs of hazardous waste on-site at once. An SQG must get an EPA Identification Number.
• Large Quantity Generator (LQG): A hazardous waste generator of more than 2,200 lbs per month can store this waste onsite for just 90 days. An LQG also should have an EPA Identification Number.
